The word “puritan” has widely become a pejorative—it’s used as an adjective instead of a noun in today’s American lexicon. Our knowledge of the Puritans has been distilled to us through popular culture's fictional and highly critical writings such as Nathaniel Hawthorne's The Scarlet Letter and Arthur Miller's The Crucible.
